If you’re headed to work, school or another location, the last thing you expect is to have your life turned upside down. You’re imagining what you’ll do when you get there, not that you won’t make it there at all.
Unfortunately, drunk drivers are on the roads and create a significant risk to those around them. Take, for example, a case out of New Jersey, where a driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was almost three times higher than the limit.
The motorist is accused of killing one person and injuring several other people near The College of New Jersey. The man was allegedly attempting to pass vehicles in the left lane even though there were double yellow lines. While trying to pass, he struck another man’s vehicle, killing the 20-year-old driver. Five students were injured and two people from Midland Park.
The man, only 22, faces seven counts of assault by auto and another for vehicular manslaughter. He was also injured in the collision. His passenger is still in the hospital with a traumatic brain injury and other injuries.
The sad part about cases like this is how easy it would have been to have prevented these serious injuries and the loss of one person’s life. Calling a taxi, avoiding getting behind the wheel until sober or calling a friend for a ride could all have been simple changes to make in exchange for avoiding a serious collision that will have major repercussions for the perpetrator as well as for the victims and their families.
