New Jersey road safety has been a primary focus of legislators, law enforcement and safety advocates. This is due to the number of collisions with injuries and fatalities that have been happening in recent years. Pedestrians are particularly at risk. In fact, 2024 was the worst year for pedestrian deaths and the third worst year for cyclists in nearly three decades.
With these numbers, it makes it surprising that the budget presented by Gov. Phil Murphy for 2026 will substantially reduce the funding for transportation. While people using the state roads are undoubtedly aware of the risks they face, this adds a new wrinkle to contend with. If there is an accident and they are injured or lose a loved one, knowing their options is even more important.
Budget cuts could hinder various local road safety initiatives
Vision Zero is a program with the ambitious strategy to eventually end all traffic fatalities. While that is an unlikely outcome, its improvements to road design, creation of walkways, reduction of speed limits, enforcement of the laws, and educating people are viewed as critical to lowering the number of accidents.
With the budget constraints, Vision Zero could see a reduction in funding. This is especially worrisome on a local level because many higher-risk roads are in rural areas where there might not be sidewalks and vigilance over speeding vehicles. If the budget moves forward as proposed, funding would be cut by more than half in 2026. Since there was a 14% spike in statewide road deaths in 2024 from 2023, there is understandable fear that the numbers will get worse with less money to pay for safety projects.
Know how to confront the challenges after an auto accident
When a person was hurt in an auto crash or lost a loved one to a fatal collision, it is vital to know what can be done to recover personally, emotionally, and financially. There will be medical costs, pain and suffering, lost wages, and the inability to contribute to a family. Those impacted need to consider all the problems that accompany a crash.
From the start, the circumstances of the accident need to be fully investigated. Evidence can be critical to making a full recovery in every way. Having experienced guidance can be fundamental to an effective claim. This is true for any incident, car accident or otherwise, that results in personal injury.
